Adverts for digipaks

An advert for a digipak is to get the customers aware that there is a new album coming out from the artist. It will give reveiws on what newpapers an magazines have said about it and the rating that they have given it. They are normally very colourful and look like the cover of the digipak.

This is a professional advert for Rhianna's album LOUD, it looks a lot like the front cover of her album with the pastel colours and the colours that she is wearing, it also gives us information of when her album will be coming out. The name of the album and when it is coming out are enlarged a lot more on the page than the rest of the wording as they are the most inportant words that the customer is looking for. The colours all compliment each other when together as they are all very soft, this is a contrast to the name of the album LOUD as it doesnt show that the album is going to be loud. The picture on the front of the advert is of Rihanna is the middle of a field this could show how she is the only girl in the world as underneath her name on the poster it has the words 'only girl in the world' as big as the wording Rihanna.

This is a digipak advert made by A2 media students for Zarif's album box of secrets, it looks very colourful and eyecatching as they have used a bright pink and black which contrast to each other but go well. It gives reviews of what newspapers thought about the album, also shows what record label they are with at the bottom so that the buyers can recogise who else the company work with. The layout is very simple with a picture of the lead singer and then a shadow of her over the words this could show that she has 2 sides and this is the box of secrets. The font of the words is very simple and doesnt compliment the words as it looks very dull. The picture looks very professional with what she is wearing and the way she is standing and posing.

Digipaks Research

A digipak is a printed card packaging that is made to fit a CD disc into it, these can be made for various requirements and draws in the customers attention as to how colourful and attractive they are. They have a fold out design that normally includes additional information about the band or lyrics to the artists songs that are on the CD.

This digipak is for Rihanna's album called LOUD. There are many pastel colours and roses which could emphasis the fact that the album could be about love as all of the colours compliment each other, however this is a contrast to the title of the album as it is called loud. With trying to decode the album cover a buyer would get the influence that it is relaxing and romantic, due to all of the soft colours. The picture on the front cover is a close up of Rhianna looking down, this shows her as being very quiet and shy but actually she must be very loud as this is the name of her album and all of her music must be loud. The layout is very simple with a picture and the wording at the bottom of the cover. The font is very soft and light to go with all of the other colours that are used in this digipak.

This digipak is for Katy Perry's Teenage Dreams album. On the outside of the digipak it shows Katy laying naked on a cloud of candyfloss showing how she is very soft and sweet. The colours are all very soft and delicate and relate to the way that she is looking in the picture on the front cover. When you open the digipak it shows very different dark colours and is a very big contrast to the front cover, this could show how everything on the outside looks very sweet but on the inside it can be a different story. The pictures on the inside cover show how she is dressed up as Queen with a crown on, this could show that she thinks that she is the Queen of pop music. This is the first digipak to smell like candyfloss as this goes with the front cover and emphases the fact that she is soft and sweet.

Target Audience

Our target audience is going to be teenagers and pop rock fans aged between 14-19. Most of them will like unknown bands music and will still be in education. There will be a mix between males and females who like our music but it will mostly be females. They love going to gigs like 'give it a name' where a lot of unknown bands play. They will like films such as Twilight and Harry Potter, they will also like TV programme's like The Vampire diaries and the Inbetweeners. Other kind of music that they will listen to will be like 'Good Charlotte' and 'All Time Low'. The uses and gratifications theory comes into action as it says how audiences need things to interact with the media, one of these things that they will be able to see in our music video will be how we can educate the viewers on how bad some relationships. Another one of these factors in the theory that will see in our music video is entertainment as most music videos are made for the viewers entertainment this will be seen in ours as well. Another factor will be how the viewers will be able to escape as they will be able to see how bad relationships are and maybe they have it easier then some people. The last factor that will be able to be seen in our music video is identification as some viewers will be able to identify to what is happening in this video as see that they are not the only people who argue in their relationship.
Here is a video from Good Charlotte

Intertexuality

Intertextuality is taking other peoples ideas that they have used and putting them into your own work.

For example in Katy Perry's music video for 'California Girls' the whole video is made up of sweets and like a land that has never been seen before. This links in to "Charlie and the chocolate factory' and "Alice in Wonderland", as they are both very mysterious places and no one ever really gets to go there and thats just the same as the sweet world that Katy Perry goes to.

Another example of intertextuality is when Madonna incorperated Marilyn Monroe's Gentleman prefer blonde's pictures in her 1980's hit music video Material Girl. The picture of Marilyn shows her dressed in pink with man surrounding her and in the Madonna video the exact same thing is happening to her but you can only see the mens hands. This shows how Madonna is inspired by Marilyns work and how show looks so she wanted to incorerate it into her own video.

An example of intertexuality that we will use in our music video is the scene in Love Actually where they are at the airport waiting for their loved ones to come home. We are going to use this but we will film the scene in a train station to try and get the same effect. We wanted to use this as when your watching the film 'love actually' you can almost feel th elove that they have their for their loved ones and want to be able to incorperate this into our video.

Media Theories

Goodwins theory was all about how there are specific conventions in music videos to specific people. He talked about how there had to be a relationship between the lyrics and the video, these had to illistrate, amplify and contradict. For example
The video had to include genre signifiers these could be props, clothing, appearance and locations. He said how the producers had to encode the video with things that the audience would be able to decode, this is things such as in a love song the main girl could be wearing red because she is in love. You have to make sure that you use iconography; where the audience can recognise images. He said how the record companies make sure that there are a lot of close ups of the main star in the videos so that everyone can know who they are so they will want to buy the single or album. Voyerism should be used, this is where you are watching or spying on someone in the video. A motif can be used this is where there is a reoccuring image or theme going through the whole video. Intertexual reference's should be used to show that you may admire someone elses work that they have used in another video.
This music video from maroon 5 shows how this theory is put into action

Laura Mulveys Male Gaze Theory talks about how in films and music videos we are always seeing the women from a males perspective. As we will always see them as being sexy and the camera will always pan up and down her as if a male is looking at her. This objectifies women as it shows how men can have more power than they do. They show women as objects as they are always made to look very pretty and put in very sckimpy clothing to show off a lot of skin. When audiences decode the text they will be able to see how women are sexualised and some women may not like to see that. There are 3 specific things that you will find in music videos: the first one is the perspective of the male this is the camera angles and the way she looks, the second one is perspective of the spectator this is what the audience are seeing, and the third one is both of them put together.
This video of the saturdays show how this theory is true.

We are currently working on creating a music video for a rock/pop song.
What is your take on music from this genre?

What do you think makes a good rock/pop music video?

What do you think makes a bad rock/pop music video?

State a successful rock/pop music video and state why it is successful.

Any other comments or advise you may wish to give.

From our questionnaires we found out that alot of people liked a mix of genres but 90% of the people i asked said they like special effects and would prefer to see them in the music video. Also every questionnaire that we got back said that there needs to be some sort of storyline in order for the music video to be successful.

Catagories of Music Videos

Narrative is where there is usually a storyline throughout the whole video, this can normally be seen with a romantic song as is it normally a love story, the genre these tend to fall is is: rock, RnB and pop. An example of this could be Taylor Swift's love story as its about her and a boy who want to be together and then at the end they finally do.

Concept is where a music video has one theme to it throughout this is a very rare form of music video and doesnt normally fall into any specific genre as it could be used for any. An example of this could be Katy Perry's California Girls as the whole way through the video it shows her in a magic sweet land as a board game.

Performance is where a band is usually playing in the video, this can usually be seen in the genre rock as they are normally playing at gigs. An example of this can be You Me At Six's Underdog as the whole way through it shows them playing in their band.

Music Video Analysis

Jessie J - Whos laughing now
This video shows a young girl going through school and getting bullied, this video can probably relate to a lot of young school children as they were growing up as many children these days do get bullied at school. It also shows the young girl not being able to stick up for her self because other children will laugh and encourage the young bullies to want to carry on. It shows quite a popular convention in music videos as many pop artists will relate to something that has happened in their life before. There are many close up shots of Jessie as she the star in the video and this is what the managers ask for the production people to do. You see a lot of Jessie as she plays mainly every character in the video as she plays the cleaner, teacher and dinner lady which is in every scene. The mise en scene is of the school as that is most places were children get bullied. There are many bright colours in this video to show that she is now over the bullying and it doesn't bother her any more. All of the bullies are wearing the same colour of pink showing how they all want to be the same as each other. There is an action match of the little Jessie and the older Jessie from when she is looking up from the table and Jessie is behind it. This shows how it is the same person:

Beyonce - if i were a boy
At the beginning of the video beyonce and her boyfriend in the video say words that a relationship is supposed to have and they are dressed very natural to show that this is a natural thing of life. It shows a lot of juxtaposition between men andwomen and how men treat women for example when she made the man breakfast and he couldn't care less. As the video is in black and white it shows everything as being dull and that women are not happy with the way men treat them as the atmosphere could show the unhappiness of the women being in her relationship. It also shows a women flirting and dancing with another man when her boyfriend is on the other side of the room shows how men make women feel with other women. Many of the shots are repeated throughout the video as it shows a women being in a mans role and then
the man being back in his role.
When Beyonce has her arms round the man in the video when they are shooting at the wall it challenges the ideologies given to men as it is usually the men putting their arms round the women to help them out.
There is a shot of another police officer looking at Beyonce's bum whilst she is trying to get a criminal into the car. This relates to Laura Mulvey's theory as the way that the man is looking at her shows how she is being portrayed as an object for a male to look at.
There are also binary oppositions between the male and female aspects in the video as the female seems to be objectified as she is seen to be something to look at whereas the male seems to have an active role and is shown to have a lot to do.

Pink - Stupid girls

This video is all about there being pressure on girls to be like all of the celebrities as they all show ideologies that men want to see in a women. There are a lot of ways shown where girls are being 'stupid' where pink has reenacted things that celebrities have done in the past that make them not look very intelligent. There is a part in the video where you see her go into the bathroom and shove a tooth brush down her throat because she has eaten over '300 calories'. This shows what pressure girls have to be skinny because a lot of the celebrities are skinny with big boobs and many young children will follow them as they may look up to them. Men will want their girlfriend/wife to look a certain figure that they have seen on TV or in a magazine because they want to have a girlfriend to look like them, when that shouldn't be the way men think. This links to Laura Mulvey's theory as women are being seen as an object to look at and not a living human being.
